The purpose of life is a life of purpose.

Robert Byrne

We each have a circle of people that we are acquainted to with whom we have various discussions with. Generally, each one of us has their own set of beliefs about a particular aspect in life and the stand we each choose should be respected because truth is, we all have a different viewpoint on literally everything around us. I have always been the type of person who enjoyed thought provoking conversations because I appreciate the difference in opinion which adds to my knowledge base and I believe has made me quite open minded about a lot of things and my approach towards them. This week I decided to call up and check on three young women; Sphe, Khosi and Noxy, with whom I was in University with. We spoke about a number of things especially all that has happened since graduation, the impact it had on us and what we were looking forward to for this year. It was just amazing to hear what plans each of them had and I just remember telling Noxy, who’s working on her beauty brand and Khosi who has something in the pipeline as well just how pleased I am to see each one of us just coming to and finding things we are passionate about despite everything especially having not found work in our field of study since completion. What stood out for me from all three women was their faith, purpose driven motivation and excitement filled optimism about what this year would bring. These women got me thinking after we spoke. Honestly, they partly inspired todays article. As much as we never really went deep or directly into it but from what we spoke about, determining your why” as an individual stuck with me. So, I’ll be dissecting the concept of purpose as based on my Christian spiritual beliefs today.

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.

Friedrich Nietzsche

The Longman Dictionary defines purpose as an intention or a plan or the feeling of having an aim in life. On the other hand, the Oxford Dictionary defines purpose as the intention, aim or function of something; the thing that something is supposed to achieve or the meaning that is important and valuable to you. What is common for both is the fact that purpose is about aim and intention which speaks to it being something of which you have a strong interest towards. It is about determining, planning and executing whatever it is that you are strongly interested in and is meaningful to you. You build and grow into it. We each have battled with ascertaining what our purpose is in life, what it is that we are supposed to achieve for us to actually feel like we have done something of significance. I am sure you have been asked what your short and long term goals are and how those will not only impact you but those around you as well. Well, some have downright asked what your purpose is in life. I have received these questions countless times before and I honestly never truly knew how to respond to it because I always believed purpose had to be something grand, not anything small and insignificant. Well, I was young then and never put much thought to it, however over the years I have tried to understand the core of what purpose is, a general and observational aspect of it of course from my own perspective and as drawn from the ethos of Christianity.

We wait for our purpose to be revealed to us not realizing that it is what we are doing already. We think purpose has to be this grand and impressive thing that will allow people the chance to praise us. We don’t realize that purpose doesn’t have to be huge rather should be directed towards doing good and not based on the magnitude and gain of it all. We live our lives in pursuit of the true meaning of our lives that we lose sight of everything else around us. In truth we stop living and appreciating all that life is supposed to offer us. On Wednesday, I responded to a comment on one of the articles I published (The Quiddity of Love) and thereafter just had an insightful conversation with Zoly, another young woman I went to University with (yes, I went to school with intelligent and insightful women), phenomenal, isn’t it? Anyhow, the thought that came to mind in response to that comment was that God was the wellspring from which all things good and positive flow. That in fact, we draw all understanding and everything else that matters from Him. This got me thinking then about purpose the fact that God being the architect (Colossians 1:16-17), author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2-3), aren’t we then meant to find our purpose in Him? I mean in Him we have our being and are His offspring after all (Acts 2:28). Interesting notion, isn’t it? Well, being a child of God and serving Him I have found that He always just does things on His own terms. I can have a plan and a way to execute it but it is as if He always just turns me towards a different direction. I think having a relationship with Him is the major reason why I am never frantic about anything and actually accepting of how things in my life go. Understand though that I am not content with mediocrity because God isn’t mediocre and since I was made in His image, how can I be? In any case, I always believe that God has something grand planned for my life (Jeremiah 29:11) and that I am coming into the acknowledgement of my purpose due that fact because His ways are higher than my ways (Isaiah 55:8-9) and like I said, He is the architect of my life and knows all plans for my life; in turn, I trust Him!

Live the life of your dreams: Be brave enough to live the life of your dreams according to your vision and purpose instead of expectations and opinions of others.

Roy T. Bennet

God knows what our purpose is. He guides us toward it, but we are always so caught up in our lives that we never take heed of it. Perhaps you have been told countless times that you are a good listener, that you give great advice, that you are good at comforting people, that you are a great confidant, that you are a great writer, that you are a great story teller, that you are a great speaker, that you are a great singer and that you possess a heart of a giver etc. Well, have you ever thought that one positive thing which has been said by those around you who actually felt the impact of it could be in actual fact your purpose? Have you ever thought about it or you are still waiting for a sign, still skeptical about it and you don’t have enough confidence to take it up? If you are in Christ, He gives you great understanding of things especially your true intention in life. He sets out a vision for you, determines a plan of execution as well as the path you have to journey in to actually find the purposeful seed He has planted inside you and for you to allow it to grow. Due to the fact that we choose not to listen to God and lose sight of that which He presents to us NOW, we let go of the wisdom that would allow us to find our purpose. Our purpose is to serve and glorify Him because He chose us (I Peter 2:9). These seeds grow and bear fruit the closer you get to Him because you cannot determine your purpose on your own accord. We have, or rather I have tried to do things my way and they never worked out. Only God determines your true meaning (Proverbs 19:21).

We each need to find God to find our purpose because without building a relationship with Him we won’t be able to ascertain that fact. You need a spiritual understanding (Proverbs 20:5) of this fact through knowing God, praying and even before you say anything to Him, the Spirit already has interceded on your behalf (Romans 8:26-28). So friends, lest you do this, you will constantly be in pursuit of what your purpose is instead of living. God is always on watch and His purpose for our lives is wonderful on its own (Jeremiah 32:19)- we ought to believe in ourselves! God gave us authority and confidence to do anything we set our minds to, as long as it is positive, good and to honor Him. Gods plan stands and no man can ever distort that, if you are faithful to God and trust Him, He will never let you down (Job 42:2). If you are born again in spirit and live your life as based on His precepts, you will never go wrong. However, by not choosing God and living a life worthy of Him, you have actually rejected His purpose for your life and He will not manifest it over your life.

One thing I take comfort in as I journey through life is that I know God will fulfil his purpose for my life (Psalms 138:8). You may not share similar sentiments but since allowing God to take control of my life, I have seen Him work through me for the good of others. I have seen Him use me as a vessel through me just being me and not being ashamed of what I stand for especially when it comes to Him. I know what my purpose is and the closer God and I get, the more it makes sense and me actually taking it up. So today if you are still battling in determining your purpose, I ask that you go to God, request that He takes control of your heart, life and actually trust that He will guide you towards it. What you need to remember though is that once he reveals that purpose to you, use it for good, to honor and glorify Him. Today draw nearer to His salvation and righteousness (Isaiah 46:10-13) because if you find Him, all things will be added to you (Matthew 6:33). So, What God will place in your heart and over your life through your journey is the meaning for your life, the aim and the intention, the purpose actually which you have been looking for.

In truth guys, your purpose is that one thing your heart has been set on for years, that is the seed God planted in you. Stop doubting, Stop being afraid, stop searching for that which you know God has set you out to do. Now get at it. Go for it!
If your purpose is to sing, motivate, write, counsel, heal, invent, etc. just go for it. The time is now. Do it! Actually, if it spreads love, kindness, goodness, joy, hope, comfort, peace, faith and brings people closer to God, trust that it is YOUR PURPOSE!

Find God. Find your purpose!
